  • The aim of this course is to meet the mandatory minimum standards of competence for seafarers to maintain safe navigation through the use of information from navigation equipment and systems to assist command decision-making at the Management Level as specified in table A-II/2 of the STCW 1878, as amended.
  • This course is designed in accordance with IMO model course 1.08.
 
COURSE AIM / OBJECTIVE:
Those successfully completing this course will be able to make efficient and effective use of radar as a navigational aid in congested, confined waters, recognize potential threats and make valid navigational and collision-avoidance decisions based on sound radar observation and plotting in compliance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG). Ability to plan, organize and manage a bridge team, making use of all navigational data, will also be achieved. Successful completion of this course will also provide ability to respond to, co-ordinate and execute a search and rescue operation.
 
COVERAGE / PROGRAM FOCUS:
  • Detailed theory of Radar and ARPA
  • Perform Radar plotting
  • Factors affecting radar plotting are identified correctly
  • Use ARPA and navigation information to control safe navigation and collision avoidance
  • Apply COLREGS in clear and in restricted visibility
  • Plan and control navigation in confined water
  • Control navigation in / near traffic separation schemes
  • Manage a bridge team
  • Plan and co-ordinate search and rescue
  • Co-ordinate search and rescue operation
  • Execute a search and rescue operation
 
TEACHING METHOD:
  • The training center uses the latest TRANSAS equipment and simulator.
 
ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP: COURSE CERTIFICATE:
  • Entry to this course is open to Deck Officers prior issue of Class-2 Deck (CoC).
 
TARGET GROUP: COURSE CERTIFICATE:
  • A certificate of course completion shall be issued to those who shall satisfactorily fulfill the course requirements.
  • NOTE: At the end of the course, examination is conducted by the Department of Shipping who will issue the RADAR-ML certificate to successful candidates.
