COURSE AIM / OBJECTIVE:
This course aims to equip individual with operational skills, knowledge and attitudes of Able Seafarer Engine. The learner should have the following knowledge and practical skills at the end of the course:
  • Assist with marine engineering watch-keeping duties at support level
  • Assist with bunkering and liquid transfers at the support level
  • Contribute to the operations of the ship and care for persons on board at the support level
  • Follow safe electrical electronic and control engineering processes at the support level
  • Provide maintenance and repair on board ship at support the level
  • Carry out designated security duties and contingency plans at the support level
 
COVERAGE / PROGRAM FOCUS:
  • Safe engineering watch
  • Monitoring and controlling of an engine-room watch
  • Fueling and oil transfer operations
  • Bilge and ballast operations
  • Operation of equipment and machinery
  • Safe use of electrical equipment
  • Shipboard maintenance and repair
  • Handling of stores
  • Precautions and contribute to the prevention of pollution of the marine environment
  • Occupational health and safety procedures
 
TEACHING METHOD:
  • The course consists of both theoretical and practical sessions. The course will cover four specific areas like Navigation; Cargo handling and stowage; Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board; Maintenance and repair. Theoretical sessions will be conducted in classrooms with modern facilities. Practical sessions can be conducted using CBT and or in workshops acquired.
 
ENTRY REQUIREMENT / TARGET GROUP: COURSE CERTIFICATE:
  • This course is intended for Engine ratings who:
  • 1. Is not less than 19 years of age
  • 2. Has 12 months sea service after holding engineering watch rating certificate or 36 months sea service as GP rating including 18 months sea in the engine department after holding engineering watch rating certificate.
  • 3. Possesses Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat certificate as per rule 15(1). (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011)
  • 4. Possesses Able Seafarer Engine certificate as per rule 20. (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011)
  • 5. Has Medical fitness as per rule 25 (Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ministry of Shipping Notification – Dated 8th February 2011).
 
TARGET GROUP: COURSE CERTIFICATE:
  • A certificate of course completion shall be issued to those who shall satisfactorily fulfill the course requirements.
  • Certificate of Proficiency is issued by the Department of Shipping, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
